Skillfully Handcrafted. A Shigeru Kawai grand piano comes from the same advanced origins like every other Kawai instrument. And, nevertheless: the degree and the measure of the used manual labor in every stage of the origin process - often time 5 times more than by a traditional instrument - puts the Shigeru Kawai to grand piano in own class.

Japanese EZO spruce. The snow-shrouded mountains of Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island, are home to the rare Ezo Spruce. The extreme climate and lofty altitude of Hokkaido produce a wood that is prized for its close, even grain. Available in strictly limited quantities, Ezo Spruce provides exceptional energy transmission and tonal projection.

Kigarashi Premium-Aged Soundboards. In the language of wood, "kigarashi" means "finding balance through time and nature." In the kigarashi process, solid Ezo Spruce soundboards are allowed to season naturally. The process is arduous and requires much patience. The result is a supremely rich tonal quality that is unsurpassed. Only soundboards that can endure the demanding kigarashi process are deemed worthy of the SHIGERU piano.

Shigeru Kawai Action. The Most Precise Piano Action in the World. More than three decades of research and development have resulted in the most respected piano action available today. The "Millennium III Action" with ABS-Carbon stands alone in providing the finest combination of strength, stability, precision and reliability. The exclusive Millennium III Action is the secret behind the ultra-responsive touch of the SK Series grand pianos. Our acclaimed Millennium III Action uses state-of-the-art ABS-Carbon components that are exceptionally light and rigid to provide faster repetition and more power with less effort. Microscopic surface textures on selected action parts provide superb response and control.

Shigeru Kawai action detail. Exclusive "Shiko Seion" Hammers. "Shiko Seion" is translated "the highest level of voicing." Shiko Seion hammers are made and voiced entirely by our Master Piano Artisans with a select blend of New Zealand and Australian long-fiber wool. They are hand-pressed, reinforced and formed without artificial hardeners to deliver unmatched dynamics and expression for the artist.

Temaki Bass Strings. "Temaki" literally means "hand-rolled." In the unhurried Temaki process, the artisan patiently directs the winding of each bass string by hand for absolute precision and proper tension, which ensures exquisite tonal depth.

Rich, deep bass and bright, colorful highs reveal even more refined expressive power. Tradition and technology are indispensable elements of piano tone. Tradition lays the foundation for Shigeru Kawai’s distinctive tonal character. Technology empowers it with life, breadth, and depth that lasts from generation to generation. Shigeru Kawai Grand Pianos Are Celebrated for Their Expressive Tone and Extensive Dynamic Range That Allow Pianists to Communicate with Ease and Passion. The exclusive Konsei Katagi rim uses a blend of distinctive hardwoods to achieve an ideal balance of tone. For the inner rim, small-pored hardwoods that provide superior brightness and projection are interlaminated with dense, large-pored hardwoods offering warmth and fullness. This synergy of structurally divergent hardwoods produces a powerful, well-rounded richness of tone that is the hallmark of Shigeru Kawai pianos. The soundboard is the heart of a piano's tone. The custom-tapered soundboard in a Shigeru piano is made exclusively from the finest spruce, aged by the traditional kigarashi process that uses only the forces of time and nature to allow the wood to attain a state of natural balance. It is this lengthy and painstaking process that gives Shigeru pianos their uniquely rich tonal quality. Each one is strategically tapered to provide the proper degree of resonant movement in each region. Only soundboards that exceed demanding resonance standards are selected for use in the Shigeru Kawai Series grand pianos. Dual Duplex Scaling is an important design element that helps to make possible the beautiful singing quality of the SK Series grand pianos. Duplex Scaling allows the extreme ends of the piano’s strings to vibrate and produce harmonics that enhance tone. Dual Duplex design combines a front duplex region (between the tuning pins and agraffes) with a similar rear duplex region (between the aliquots and the bridge) to add a double measure of harmonic richness, brilliance, complexity and sustain to the piano’s tone. The bridge performs the vital task of transferring the vibrations of the strings to the soundboard.SK bass bridges are made of the highest quality hard woods. Available only on SK-5, SK-6 and SK-7 Boxwood is an extremely hard wood that is particularly effective in transferring higher tonal frequencies through the bridge to the soundboard. Boxwood bridge caps help to ensure treble projection that complements the more powerful bass sound of larger pianos. Shigeru Kawai Concert Agraffes are individually machined from billet brass rods to assure maximum precision and strength. The result is a clear, powerful and impressive tone. Hard brass agraffes – positioned through precise CNC drilling of the iron plate – ensure accuracy of string alignment, spacing and angles for the greatest uniformity of tone. They also allow the most precise measurement of “speaking length" for the strings and provide smooth string movement for ease of tuning.

Strength. The strength of a well-crafted instrument makes the piano one of the most impressive examples of technology, engineering and craftsmanship in the world today. SK Series grand pianos are designed with tremendous strength to ensure stability of tone and touch over time. Exceptionally Rigid Foundation to Support String Tension. Stretcher Over-Lap Integrated Design (SOLID) creates an exceptionally rigid foundation to support string tension. With SOLID construction, the pinblock is fitted to the plate. The pinblock and over-lapping stretcher bar are then integrated into a single structure and solidly anchored to the rim. The stretcher bar itself boasts an extraordinary thickness that exemplifies the structural integrity of this sturdy framework designed to ensure stable tuning and powerful tone. The keybed is made of extremely strong, laminated hardwoods. Kawai reinforces each keybed with an underside steel support beam to provide additional strength and maximum stability. A piano's "keyslip" is the long, horizontal piece of wood that covers the front faces of the keys. Because it is made of wood, a keyslip can warp or bend with changes in humidity causing keys to stick. SK Series keyslips are reinforced with a steel inside liner that prevents warping or bending in any direction. Keys move freely as the keyslip remains straight and evenly distanced from the key faces throughout the life of the piano. Rims Stronger Than Steel - Beams Impervious to Weather Changes. Hybrid Inner Rim. (Konsei Katagi Rim). The exclusive Konsei Katagi rim uses a blend of distinctive hardwoods to achieve an ideal balance of tone. For the inner rim, small-pored hardwoods that provide superior brightness and projection are interlaminated with dense, large-pored hardwoods offering warmth and fullness. This synergy of structurally divergent hardwoods produces a powerful, well-rounded richness of tone that is the hallmark of the Shigeru piano. All-Spruce Beams. Spruce is known for its outstanding ability to conduct and conserve sound energy. However, it is generally considered too precious for use as a structural material. For the Shigeru pianos, all of the underside beams are made entirely of the highest quality spruce. SECURE RIM-TO-BEAM CONNECTION. Beams are joined to the inner rim using four independent joinery techniques in a single process. Each beam is: (1) fitted with a hardwood dowel, (2) mortised into the inner rim for precise fit, (3) glued, and (4) secured with hardened screws for complete bonding through the entire thickness of the inner rim for a tremendously secure rim-to-beam connection. The V-Pro (Vacuum Mold Process) plate on the Kawai SK Series is the acoustically-neutral gray iron framework of the piano on which the strings are applied. As the “backbone” of the piano, the plate must be designed and built to ensure stability while enduring up to 18 tons of string tension. At the same time, it must be molded with sufficient precision to ensure exact string lengths. The V-Pro process produces a sturdy plate that is dimensionally accurate and consistent, with added strength provided by the “crossbone” design of the plate struts. With the application of a lustrous finish and the addition of highly-polished solid brass finials, the result is a plate that is strong, stable and beautiful. Multi-Grip Pin Block for Maximum Strength and Tuning Pin Balanced Torque. The Multi-Grip pinblock on all SK Series grand pianos is fully laminated with a minimum of eleven cross-banded layers of North American hard maple for maximum strength and balanced torque. Tuning pins are made from the finest carbon steel, machine-threaded for maximum continuous torque and nickel plated to enhance beauty and provide long-term protection.
